Four Titles Still to be Decided in Portugal
21/10/2020
  1. The 4 Hours of Portimão is the fifth and final round of the 2020 European Le Mans Series.
  2. Bumper grid of 36 cars across the three classes, which promises to provide the same high octane, action packed racing we have come to expect from the ELMS.

LMP2: Who Will Join United Autosports at Le Mans in 2021?

While the LMP2 titles have been decided there is still an invitation to the 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans to be won by the second placed car in the category.

Portuguese driver Filipe Albuquerque and his British teammate Phil Hanson have amassed a total of 94 points in the first four races of the season, with three wins, a third place and four pole positions. Their lead is unbeatable, and they were declared as 2020 ELMS champions at the end of the 4 Hours of Monza.

After finishing second in Italy earlier this month, the no32 United Autosports Oreca of Alex Brundle, Job Van Uitert and Will Owen has 57 points in second spot, 20 points ahead of the no39 Graff Oreca and the no31 Panis Racing Oreca, with both French teams on 37 points, one ahead of the no26 G-Drive Racing Aurus. The second invitation to Le Mans will be between these four cars in Portimão.

As well as a new champion, Portugal will also have a vested interest in the two Algarve Pro Racing Orecas that will both be hoping for a podium finish at home in the final race of the season after some strong performances.

LMP3: Championship Decider in Portugal

After winning the opening two races of the 2020 season, the no2 United Autosports Ligier of all British crew Wayne Boyd, Tom Gamble and Rob Wheldon have led the way in the LMP3 category, but after a DNF in round 3 and a third place finish in Monza, the rest of the field have closed the gap. United Autosports face two main challengers for the title in Portugal.

The no13 Inter Europol Competition Ligier of Martin Hippe and Dino Lunardi head to Portugal following their victory in Italy with 58 points, just 10 points behind the championship leaders. The no8 Realteam Racing Ligier of David Droux and Esteban Garcia have one victory in Round 3 at Le Castellet to their 2020 tally and are currently 3rd with 50 points.

Reigning champions Eurointernational have a mathematical chance at retaining their title in 2020, the no11 Ligier currently on 47 points in 4th place, 21 behind the leaders with 26 points on offer in Portugal.

LMGTE: A Straight Fight between Ferrari and Porsche in Portimão

The destination of the 2020 ELMS LMGTE titles will be decided between the no74 Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GTE EVO and the no77 Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR.

After claiming their second win of the season in Monza, Michael Broniszewski, Nicola Cadei and David Perel have opened up a 7-point lead in the no74 Ferrari (81pts) over the no77 Porsche of Christian Ried, Michele Beretta and Alessio Picariello (74pts).

With an automatic invitation to the 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans on offer to the top two cars in the LMGTE class, the no83 Iron Lynx Ferrari of Rahel Frey, Michelle Gatting and Manuela Gostner still has an outside chance of claiming that coveted prize.

The all-female crew are on 53 points, 21 points behind the no77 Proton Competition Porsche, with the no55 Spirit of Race Ferrari of Matt Griffin, Aaron Scott and Duncan Cameron just 1 point behind the no83 Ferrari in 4th on 52 points.

The LMGTE grid has been bolstered by two extra entries with the no86 Gulf Racing Porsche 911 RSR of Michael Wainwright, Ben Barker and Andrew Watson and the no88 AF Corse Ferrari of Emmanuel Collard, François Perrodo and Alessio Rovera.

The 4 Hours of Portimão weekend will get underway on Friday 30th October and conclude on Sunday 1st November where the names of the 2020 champions will be revealed.
