The no26 G-Drive Racing Aurus 01-Gibson was the fastest car in the opening session of the 4 Hours of Portimão weekend, the final event on the 2020 European Le Mans Series calendar. The championship leader in LMP3 got their race weekends off to a good start by posting the fastest time in the class.
Nyck De Vries was the fastest of the three drivers in the no26 Aurus, the Dutch driver posting a 1m28.649 lap time, 0.6 seconds ahead of the no28 IDEC Sport Oreca of Paul Loup Chatin and 0.8 ahead of the no37 Cool Racing Oreca of Nico Lapierre.
The newly crowned champions Filipe Albuquerque and Phil Hanson finished the session in 10thplace. Albuquerque posted the no22 United Autosports Oreca’s best time of 1m30.413, 1.6 seconds behind the sessions best time.
The no2 United Autosports Ligier was the fastest car in LMP3, the championship leaders nearly 0.3 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.Wayne Boyd posted a 1m36.081, 0.292s ahead of David Droux in the championship contending no8 Realtime Racing Ligier, with the no15 RLR MSport Ligier in third spot, 0.598 adrift of the top spot.
The second placed car in the championship, the no13 Inter Europol Competition Ligier of Martin Hippe and Dino Lunardi finished the 90-minute session in 9thplace, 1.4 seconds behind the leading car.
The no77 Proton Competition Porsche set the pace in the LMGTE class, with Alessio Picariello setting a 1m39.306 lap.The championship contenders were 0.206 seconds ahead of the no60 Iron Lynx Ferrari of Andrea Piccini, with the top five cars split by less than 0.3 seconds.
The no74 Kessel Racing Ferrari, which is currently leading the championship, finished the session in 7th, 0.719 seconds behind their championship rivals.
