Opportunity Knocks for Drivers in ELMS Rookie Test in Portimao

The 2023 European Le Mans Series Rookie Test will take place on Monday 23 October, with 21 cars taking part.  AF Corse will run a pair of LMGT3 spec Ferrari 296 GT3s in preparation for the introduction of the category in the 2024 ELMS.

There are 13 LMP2 cars taking part in the test, with some familiar names taking to the track.

2013 24 Hours of Le Mans LMGTE AM winner and 2017 TCR International Champion Jean-Karl Vernay will be joining LMP3 Champion Alejandro Garcia and Thai driver Carl Wattana Bennett in the no30 Duqueine Team Oreca for the test.

Michael Fassbender will get the opportunity to test an LMP2 car, with the Irish-German actor driving the no99 Proton Competition Oreca alongside his LMGTE teammate Richard Lietz and the of the no16 Porsche Matteo Cairoli.Current driver of the no99 car Giorgio Roda will also test on Monday.

Algarve Pro Racing will test 22-year-old Clement Novalak, the former BRDC British F3 Champion and third placed overall in the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship.The Portuguese team will also test LMGTE racer Kriton Lentoudis, the Greek driver running alongside British GT4 race winner Freddie Tomlinson in the no25 Oreca.

Asian Le Mans Series race winner, and former Michelin Le Mans Cup racer, Christian Bogle will test for Nielsen Racing, while former F4 UAE Championship race winner Lorenzo Fluxa will test an LMP2 car with COOL Racing.

United Autosports USA will test American Bijoy Garg, with the 2023 IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge LMP3 Champion driving the race winning no22 Oreca. Reigning Asian Le Mans Series LMP3 Champion Vyacheslav Gutak will test the no19 Team Virage Oreca-Gibson.

MLMC GT3 front runner Tim Creswick will test an LMP3 car with Inter Europol Competition alongside Canada’s Adam Ali.

Young Danish driver Mathias Jakobsen will test for RLR MSport. The 17-year-old, who has two wins in the F4 Denmark series this year, is no relation to 2022 ELMS LMP3 Champion Malthe Jakobsen.

The ELMS Rookie Test will be held over two 3-hour sessions on Monday, starting at 10h00 for the first session, with the second starting at 14h00.
