The 2024 European Le Mans Series will once again feature six 4-hour races on six of the most challenging circuits in Europe. Barcelona, Le Castellet, Imola, Spa-Francorchamps and Portimao will host a race this season, with the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello staging a round of the ELMS for the first time in the 49-year history of the Italian circuit in September.
The Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello is situated in Tuscany, less than 40km from the historic city of Florence. The circuit was opened on the 23 June 1974, with the current layout of 15 turns covering 5.245km (3.259 miles), and a main straight of over 1.1km. Prior to the current circuit being built, the area was renowned for the road races held on the public streets of Mugello from the 1920s.
Mugello is the current home of the Italian Motorcycle Grand Prix and is owned by Scuderia Ferrari, which has owned the circuit since 1988 and uses it for F1 testing. In 2020 Mugello hosted its first F1 event, the Tuscan Grand Prix, which was also the 1000th Grand Prix for Scuderia Ferrari.
While seven times FIA F1 Champion Lewis Hamilton holds the outright race lap record at Mugello with a 1m18.833, set during the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix, there are current lap records for LMP3 and GT3 at the circuit.
2013 ELMS LMGTE Champion Johnny Mowlem holds the LMP3 lap record of 1m45.598, set during the Ultimate Cup round in 2019 in a Norma M30. The current GT3 lap record was set by Riccardo Agostini in a Lamborghini Huracan back in 2017, the Italian lapping the 5.245km track in 1m47.017. Being the first visit to the Italian track by the ELMS, new lap records will be set for each of the four classes.
The 4 Hours of Mugello will take place on Sunday 29th September, which will be Round 5 of the 2024 European Le Mans Series.
