THE TRACK
- Road races were held on public streets around Mugello from the 1920s until 1970.
- The present-day circuit was constructed in 1973 and opened the following year.It is about 5km east from the eastern most part of the original road circuit.
- The current Grand Prix circuit is 5.245km (3.259 miles) in length, with 15 turns.
- The race lap record is held by Lewis Hamilton with a 1m18.833 lap in the Mercedes W11 set during the Formula One Tuscan Grand Prix on 13 September 2020.
- The Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello is owned by Scuderia Ferrari, who use it for F1 testing. The 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix was the 1000thGP contested by Ferrari.
- The circuit hosts the MotoGP Gran Premio d’Italia.
- Multiple MotoGP World Champion and 2023 Road to Le Mans race winner Valentino Rossi has won the Italian GP at Mugello seven times from 2002 to 2008, more than any other rider.
THE REGION
- In ancient times the Mugello valley was settled by a Ligurian tribe known as the Magelli, hence the name. Then the region was occupied by the Etruscans who left many archaeological traces and who built the first road network of the Mugello.
- The region was conquered by Rome in the 4thCentury BC.
- In the Middle Ages the Mugello was home to numerous castles, with the region later acquired by the Republic of Florence. Several noble families built villas, including the famous Medici family.
- The town of Scarperia became known far and wide for artisan, handmade knives of all sorts. There is a knife museum in the town, and there are several family-run knife workshops still remaining.
- Local artist Galileo Chini (1873-1956) brought the Art Nouveau Movement to Italy which subsequently became known locally as the Liberty Movement. In the town of Borgo San Lorenzo, there is the Chini Museum, highlighting Chini ceramics and other Art Nouveau paintings and details.
