2019-20 FIA World Endurance GTE Drivers champion Marco Sorensen has been competing this season in the LMGTE category alongside Ahmad Al Harthy and Sam De Haan in the no69 Oman Racing with TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage. The highlight of the season so far was the victory at Imola which made ELMS history for the first Omani driver and team to take a win in the series.
In addition, Marco Sorensen also stood on the top step of the LMGTE AM podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June for TF Sport, the first Le Mans win for the Danish driver.
We caught up with Marco as he prepares for Round 4 of the ELMS in Barcelona, getting his thoughts on the season so far and the challenge ahead in the final three races of the 2022 season.
Q. We've now completed three of the six ELMS races in 2022, with victory at Imola under your belt. How would you sum up the start of the season and what were the high and low points?
Marco Sorensen: “I have been happy with what we have done so far. Getting a DNF at Paul Ricard put us on the back foot, but we came back at Imola and got the big points. Monza was really tough for us with the changes made regarding our BOP, so we had no chance of even getting close to the top. But it’s been super nice working with my two teammates Sam and Ahmad.”
Q. You raced at Le Mans with TF Sport alongside Ben Keating and Henrique Chaves, finishing on the top step of the LMGTE AM podium. How was the race for you and what was it like standing on the top step of the podium for TF Sport after finishing third in LMGTE Pro with Aston Martin Racing in 2020?
MS: “It’s for sure always nice to be at the top step, compared to P3. But it was two very different races. In PRO it’s a sprint all the way through, whereas in GTE AM it’s more important to make sure the car is okay and stay away from making mistakes. Different approach to both!”
Q. Looking forward to the rest of the ELMS season, we head to Barcelona next. What are your thoughts on this race and which part of the circuit is your favourite and why?
MS: “I have never raced a GT at Barcelona, so it will be fun to get some race laps in there. I did a lot of single seater races there and I would say turn 7, the uphill fast corner, is my favourite. Let’s hope it feels as nice in a GT.”
Q. After that we have Spa and Portimão, give us your thoughts on those two circuits and what you are looking forward to about each of those tracks?
MS: “My goal is to be in a better position regarding the championship before we arrive in Portimão. So, we need to get the most out of Barcelona and Spa. But to be honest, driving the GTE on any track is definitely pure joy. Spa is normally challenging regarding weather, so I hope it will be a fun race. And, of course, I expect some sun in Portugal!”
