ELMS at Spa-Francorchamps – Facts and Figures

The 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps has been a feature of the ELMS calendar since 2016 when the race was added to increase the number of rounds from five to six.  This year will be the 9th edition of the Belgian event and only the second time it has been held in August.

  1. The first race in 2016 was round 5 of the newly established six-race season.The first edition of the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps was won by the no21 DragonSpeed Oreca 05-Nissan driven by Henrik Hedman, Nicolas Lapierre and Ben Hanley.
  2. In 2016 the LMGTE category was won by the no66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari 458 Italia of Rob Smith, Rory Butcher and Andrea Bertolini, while the LMP3 class was won by the no9 Graff Ligier JS P3-Nissan of Enzo Guibbert, Paul Petit and Eric Trouillet.
  3. United Autosports is the most successful team at Spa-Francorchamps, with four wins in LMP2 (2018/2019/2020/2022) and two in LMP3 (2018/2020).Three of those wins have seen the crews go on to become ELMS champions.
  4. Phil Hanson has won the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps four times in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The first three wins were with his Portuguese teammate Filipe Albuquerque, who returns to the ELMS grid this weekend.
  5. Mikkel Jensen became the first driver in ELMS history to win a race in LMP2, LMP3 and LMGTE after the Dane won the 2022 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in LMGTE for Kessel Racing alongside Conrad Grunewald and Frederik Schandorff.Jensen won three LMP3 races on his way to the 2019 LMP3 title with Eurointernational. In 2020 he won the 4 Hours of Portimao with G-Drive Racing, finishing third overall for the 2020 LMP2 title.

  2. A new LMGT3 lap record will be set for the ELMS at this event. The LMGT3 lap record for the FIAWEC was set on 12 May 2024 by Sebastien Baud in a TF Sport Corvette with a lap time of 2m21.525 (178.2 kph).
  3. The fastest ELMS lap recorded at Spa-Francorchamps was set on 22 September 2018

Jean-Eric VERGNE - 2m00.735 - 208.8kph - LMP2 Qualifying

  1. The fastest Hypercar lap in an FIAWEC event at Spa-Francorchamps was set on the 30thApril 2021 by Kamui Kobayashi with a 2m00.747 (208.8 kph) in qualifying.
  2. The longest race was held in 2019, with the winners completing 707.39km or 101 laps of the 7.0039km circuit.
  3. The shortest race was held in 2018 when heavy rain caused several safety cars and red flags. Only 280.16km, or 40 laps, were completed when the race was stopped, with half points were awarded.
  4. Ferrari has won six times in the eight previous 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in the LMGTE category.Porsche has won twice (2018 and 2023), while Aston Martin has never won an ELMS race at Spa-Francorchamps.

The 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps is Round 4 of the 2023 European Le Mans Series and it will be held on Sunday 24 September.
